The demographic transition presents as a consequence the population aging and the search for assistance to the elderly, expanding the search for Long Stay Institutions for the Elderly (ILPI). The aim of the study was to describe the experience of medical students in a Long-Term Institution for the Elderly. Descriptive study of the experience report type, carried out according to the Problematization Methodology. It was noticeable that the inclusion of recreational activities in the daily lives of the elderly contributed to the improvement of cognitive impairment and self-esteem, providing collective integration and the realization of different experiences from the usual routine. The proposal of these activities favored the integration between the participants, improvement of the quality of life and the self-esteem of the oldest old.
